ELEVEN TIPS TO ACTING CAREER SUCCESS BY EL OSAS IYALEKHUE

Becoming an actor is a dream for a lot of persons, that burning desire to show to the world that innate talent which they possess. However many of these persons may never see this dream come true or never reach greater heights in the interpretative sphere of acting due to ignorance and avoidable mistakes.

The tips listed here are like a mini actors' guide put together to get you thinking.

1. See a lot of movies, both foreign and indigenous :   it is shocking when people who want to become  actors never see movies or don't know what actor bagged awards at the Oscar or Globe and the likes. The importance is it helps you assess their skills to improve on yours.

2. Get professional training: you can't be a professional without getting professional training. The best way to start with acting, is to join a theatre or work with a theatre director, or earn diploma or a degree in Theatre Arts.

3. See live theatre: there is no better way to appraise acting than being in a theatre to see a play. The more plays you see activates your sense of drama which every director relishes. Also, you get a first hand chance to ask questions, as most theatre directors give ample time for questions and answers.

4. Attend auditions: by every means increase your audition attendance. If you get turned down, it means you need to work harder and improve your skills. Sometimes actor are rejected not because they are bad, but because they didn't fit the part. So keep the spirit high and never stop attending auditions.

5. Network with other actors and production people: you can't be in isolation and expect to succeed. Get BBM pins, exchange numbers, ask people to tell you whenever they hear about auditions.

6. When you miss the role, get a crew job: most actors hate crew work. But this keeps you closer to the industry. Most Hollywood actors have once been Production Assistants.

7. Learn other skills: expand your mind by learning how to write, sing, dance, skate, tree. Climbing, horse riding, driving, taekwando, etc. Nothing hurts like not getting the lead role because you can't drive or swim. Good directors want actors that can fit into the shoes of great characters whose interpretation require skills.

8. Avoid set gossip: the industry is like a big family. What you say around, goes and comes back around. What mean thing you say about a director or producer can ruin your chances of ever working with them again. Talk but never be caught saying the wrong stuff.

9. Sex does not earn roles: if you can't earn a role by your sublime skills, the industry is not for you. Production people will ask for sex from you, but they will give the good roles to skilled actors, because they want to sell. Improve your skills, not your body count or your sex chart. Or better still if you like to give sex, there is another industry that needs you, try prostitution.

10. Sponsor your own short film : YouTube has become a means for shopping for actors. Put some money together, hire a good director to shoot a short film that you can upload on YouTube to attract attention.

11. Hire a personal acting coach if you can.
